The redesign moves the Outback onto an enhanced version of the Subaru Global Platform, offering more interior volume and a quieter cabin. While it retains its legendary 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard Symmetrical AWD, it now features a massive technological leap with a standard 12.1-inch vertical touchscreen and an advanced "hands-free" highway driving assistant, ensuring it remains the gold standard for outdoor enthusiasts who refuse to sacrifice safety or comfort.
Not as much as before. The 2026 model features a more upright front end, a flatter roofline, and boxier fender flares. Subaru designed this generation to look more like a traditional SUV to compete with rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, while keeping its signature long-roof utility.
Towing capacity depends on the engine. Models with the 2.5L engine are rated for 2,700 lbs, while the turbocharged XT and Wilderness models jump to 3,500 lbs. This makes the turbo variants capable of hauling small campers, utility trailers, or personal watercraft.
The Wilderness is the dedicated off-road flagship. It features an increased ground clearance of 9.5 inches, Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, a front skid plate, and unique suspension tuning with electronically controlled dampers to handle rougher trails and deep snow more comfortably.
On highway-mapped roads, the updated EyeSight® system allows for driver-supervised, hands-free steering and speed control at speeds up to 85 mph. It uses a driver-facing camera to ensure you are still paying attention to the road, providing a much more relaxed experience on long road trips.
